If you are willing to host it from your computer make sure you are on real IP.
In case that you are using router you will have to portforward it Search around the Internet for tutorials.
If you aren't on router click HERE and copy your IP.
Give the IP to friend and then test if he is able to join the server.
I'd highly recommend you to purchase host if you have serious plans about your server.
