Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 26.10.2015

So basically I'm having this issue that I wasn't before. According to some graphs I've been looking at, my GPU Usage while playing SA:MP is abnormally high and nothing else is causing it. This happens in both modded/unmodded versions of the game. This is also causing me to lose a lot of FPS. I went as far as reseting my PC but that didn't fix it. Any help period would be great. Thank you.

Did you recently update any graphics setting on your computer or at the game? Did you change your computer's power plan? Or did you perhaps mod the game?

You could try playing around with /fpslimit

I made an update to the GPU after the fact to see if that would make a difference but it really did nothing. I haven't had the bug very long but the only thing I've learned is its a really long spike in load on the graphics card and the things I look at show that it is actually gta_sa.exe spiking in load from around 20% usage to like 60% which is causing sudden FPS loss that wasn't there before. I was able to play the game at a constant 60 no matter what so I think /fpslimit can be ruled out. Modding my game? Doesn't matter because it happened on unmodded versions. Power plan is still the same as well

It showed high CPU and harddisk usage for me when I hadn't cleaned my PC, it was dirty :3

Look into your GPU, it could be a physical problem, if not you can do something about your GPU drivers, try downgrading or getting the latest update.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - Mauzen - 26.10.2015

The high GPU usage isnt the cause, its a symptom of another problem. Higher usage means the GPU is using more time for calculating the graphics. Unless this is close to 100%, it could still go faster, but something else is slowing the whole process down, so the GPU doesnt even need to use its full power. So the GPU itself doesnt limit a thing and is not responsible for the FPS drops.

What graphics card do you have? And what about the rest of your hardware (cpu, OS, etc)

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 26.10.2015

I do believe it is the GPU because at the exact time it spikes is when I lose FPS and i don't know what else it could be because I reformatted my PC over it and it is still occurring. I use a GTX 660 and Core i3 4150 CPU and Windows 10. Keep in mind this all just started and I've been playing GTA fine for about 9 months.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - Mauzen - 26.10.2015

Could be a problem with the GPU's power state then. Power states determine the speed of the GPU, and normally it should switch to and stay at P0 (maximum performance) automatically when running 3D applications. Ive been experiencing some strange behaviour with that though, especially with older games, or when using more than one monitor.

I guess you already got a GPU sensor logger (msi afterburner or something). Use it to check if the clock frequencies change when the FPS go down. This indicates the power state problem. Then you can use e.g. "nvidia inspector" to force P0 when running certain applications, which should fix the problem.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 26.10.2015

That's generally what I was thinking but for the fuck of it I'm gonna switch my OS to win 7 and see where that goes but yeah I was using Msi afterburner and numerous other programs to detect where all of t was coming from but once my PC is working correctly I will diagnose it further to see what the issue is. I'll give nvidia inspector a go and see what I can get from it. Thanks.

Mind running CTRL+ALT+DELETE Performance Monitor in the background for ~30 mins whilst you have this problem, then take a screenshot of what it looks like and upload your findings?

Sure! I'll have to do it tomorrow because I'm installing an OS but I can do that.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 27.10.2015

10 minutes into playing it on Windows 7 and it works like a charm. No issues so far but I'm not gonna call it a end yet, could come back.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 30.10.2015

And its back again. Took a while but it came back for whatever reason.

If this only happend in sa-mp, you can try to force power settings in nvidia controlpanel to "Force full performance" or what it is named....

I don't see an option in the Nvidia control panel for that.

Re: Abnormally High GPU Usage - SwirlyD - 04.11.2015

It's been a few days since I've played the game, so I don't know if that plays a factor, but so far after that I played for a 10 minute period and I only had like a 1 second spike happen once. Again I'm not saying its over because it could come back like it did before.
I have a pic of the graph of GPU usage if that means anything:
