MySQL is a relational database management system && SQL stands for Structured query language, those are two abbreviation you may want to know.
It's a server that provides multi-user access to various databases, meanwhile a MySQL database is a webhosting database that allows you store and retrieve different type of data in it.
I wouldn't recommend a novice to make a game-mode from scratch using MySQL if he/she doesn't even know what MySQL is, but you can follow this tutorial to have a bit of knowledge in the basics, like surface scratching that will let you go along with your development.
