That really only works for small floods at best.

Best bet would be to find a ddos protected host. OVH and NfoServers are the two better ones personally. But if you do a few ****** searches its quite easy to find ddos protected hosts or hosts that have ddos protected ips you can add on to your vps.

is there a way to install ddos protection? No, there a way to install a way to help block out ddos attacks yes. The only way you can have protection is by having a migration system which is either using a proxy or your host including one.
