SA:MP wont work on ubuntu, it is designed for Windows, but you can use Wine to run it.

You actually just contradicted yourself, but yea I've seen it work with WINE before. Definitely possible just obviously it won't natively run on UNIX based systems.

Khanz would you just stop spreading your Gentoo shit around, please? You like it, we get it already!
Ubuntu is probably one of the easiest distributions for beginners. Or Fedora if you want to go in the RedHat direction.

I'd go with Xubuntu instead of Ubuntu since you dont have to deal with all the Unity bloat thats comes with it and you have a very clean and nice GUI while being quite lighter on your system then base Ubuntu.
And getting Wine all setup with GTA SA and SA-MP is easy but there are bugs in the game(minor audio issues such as background noises being too loud(gunshots, tires)) and it can have some minor low FPS or choppiness issues despite it being fine on Windows.
