Depends on what OS and other services you run. CentOS uses more memory than Debian, Apache uses more memory than Lighttpd, and so on and so forth.

On CentOS 6 with an average script and without NPCs a server with 100 players online can be ran without any problems I would say.

Throwing more ram at a server doesn't necessarily mean its going to host more players. Look at the clock speed of the cpu that they give you and how the gamemode is scripted to determine the playercount.

What are the cpu specs for the vps?

bought dediacated server and get +1000 players , simple VPS is shared Ram with 512 Mb is meaning like 128 MB which lags with 50 players.

Its more than enought u can run +500 players but this is costs alot bought a dediacate server for 8,00Ђ better.
