getting files from hdd -
newbienoob - 16.11.2013
hi,
my laptop won't boot up since few months ago. all my important files are in there. so i decided to get the files from hdd using sata/ide to usb cable. but after i connected the cable to my other pc, all i can see is a "boot" folder. i cant find my files anywhere. where exactly can i find the files in my hdd?

Cant you just put the hdd in your new computer? USB doesnt make it easier. Could be possible that the usb controller doesnt support the old hdd's filesystem, so the only way to access it via usb would be reformatting.

You can try removing the hard drive and temporarily connect it to your PC or someone else's PC, but the chances are the reason your laptop is not booting is because the hard drive is completely buggered which is why you can only see your boot folder.

By not booting do you mean not starting up or not launching the os?

launching the os

You could also download and burn some knoppix dvd and boot it on the laptop. If the HDD is still working, it will detect and read it.

In which case I can quite confidently say that you will not get your files back.
