You're out of luck. Go to NASA's website and it will bounce you to a nearly blank screen bearing this message: "Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available."

Along with furloughing more than 2,000 civil servants at Kennedy Space Center, the federal government's partial shutdown has shuttered agency websites including NASA's, though some remain up on a limited basis.

Why?

The White House Office of Management and Budget last month gave agencies guidance on a host of issues, including websites, in case Congress failed to agree on a budget.

The office said websites should not be maintained, and incur costs, unless taking them down would hurt agencies' ability to perform essential, or "excepted," activities.

Those are the safety-related jobs that have kept some federal employees – but only a few at NASA – from being furloughed.

For example, the memo said, it might be necessary to keep the IRS site live to enable tax collections that would continue even during a lapse in an approved federal budget.

If a website did continue to run, OMB said, it should be maintained at the lowest possible level.

Just being useful or cool was not enough to justify keeping a website live.

"The mere benefit of continued access by the public to information about the agency's activities would not warrant the retention of personnel or the obligation of funds to maintain (or update) the agency's website during such a lapse (in funding)," the OMB memo reads.

So, no Mars rover or Hubble images at www.nasa.gov. No launch schedules. No ISS updates.

"We sincerely regret this inconvenience," the placeholder US.gov site says.

The president's good work. Now they need to stop some of the most global and progressive projects. NSA still gets its billions for its projects btw.
They need a war. NOW. Theres no real alternative but this to handle their giant debts. Poor syrians...

Its quite common logic.
Firstly, wars are a really great, maybe the best, way to boost the economy. Thats no theory, but you should actually have learned that in school. Wars do not only boost weapon industry, weapon industry boost ressource suppliers, people get hoards, and so on. Afterwards rebuilding is a huge economy booster. In other words, money flow is drastically increased. And a low money flow is one of the main problems of recessions.

Secondly, just take a look at USA's last decades wars and recessions:

Looking at the last 40 years' recessions , youll notice that (except one) every single recession was either directly followed by a war, or the war even started some months before the recession officially ended. Usually, you CANT start a war during recession, as there is no money.
As most people are probably too lazy to do so, but just yell "CONSPIRACY IDIOT" ill do so here:

Sure, as always im just a crazy conspirator talking about crazy ideas without any proof. Just ignore the above facts and think whatever you like, but id bet my ass that USA are going to start a war BEFORE they solved their financial problems (quite probably in syria). They already tried that just some weeks ago, when their financial ruin already was as sure and obvious as it is today (you dont loose trillions within a week), but luckily were stopped for several reasons.

(Edit: Sure, the current situation isnt a real recession, but basically a result of the recent recessions. Though "symptoms" are the same and even stronger, the government is rather hit from this than the industry. Possible cure is the same, a stronger economy also means more taxes and higher financial trust. So no need to cry about me talking about recessions)

BTW: Talking about me eating all thats being fed is a quite stupid idea if you call everything thats not on the news a lie and a conspiracy. You shouldnt eat just this, but rather choose your own food, and gather information beyond the TV.

the government shutdown is just to piss off civilians. why would they take down sites? i dont know, sites dont need constant maintenance and the servers do all the work.

Nasa and other govt agencies arent even shut down. My father works for a company that supplies nasa with servers, and they actually called him for support because there was a problem with one of the units :/

So the weapons and other military equipment do not cost anything for the tax payer?

Is USA materially independent when it comes to weapon industry? So there's no chance that the money would be going to a foreign land instead of their own?

Also war isn't all about building equipment, the war itself also costs some real money and guess who's paying.

The money flow is negative if you aren't getting anything in return and looking at the debts of the United States I'd imagine something's wrong there and I would also bet my ass declaring a war does not fix it.

Edit: This war mongering is actually worrying me, especially now when it's coming from a German... I didn't learn in school that war is the best way to fix economic problems, but I did learn what happened last time when the Germans started war mongering.
