Home Hosting - Devon555 - 06.09.2013

Hello,

I've been running SA-MP Servers for nearly two years, Well i am not running them anymore but my friend has plans to launch a sever and he asked me for advice and i am here to try to get some answers,

What is the best version of Linix for hosting?

Is this a good specs for home hosting?

6MBPS Upload speed
Intel Duo duel core CPU @ 2.26GHZ
4GB of ram DDR2
7200 RPM 400GB HDD

Also, What could i find the streamers, audio streamers that for Linix, He said he only has the Windows hosted verions.

Would be a great help if you reply explaining a good version of Liniux and if the computer will be able to run it, Thanks!

The issue you always have to look at for home hosting is the connection speed. You're really not going to get much of a home connection, just buy a $3 VPS and it will probably be a bit better. The easiest version of linux for starters would probably be Debian.

I'm averaging 3.7mbit w/ 30 - 40 players, hitting 4mbit @ 60 players, so your home internet can do it but you won't have much left for anything else in your house. Home internet connections don't have as good of a connection to the backbone like most hosts do. That fact will add a few ms to people's ping, which a lot of people pay attention to.

If you want to have ANY chance of a regular playerbase, that server will need to be on as much as possible. If you're hosting it on some gaming behemoth w/ a 1kw power supply you can add some electricity costs into your money-saving formula.

If you have a bunch of players, it may not be a good idea to screw around a lot on the computer hosting the server. Locking it up because a game crashed, monkeying w/ settings and causing it to tank on you, etc etc...not a good hosting experience.

The computer itself is fine but you shouldnt use it for anything other than a server. Your internet is fine if you don't plan on using much of it while you're hosting a server. If you leave the computer on 24/7/365, your light bill goes up.

A cheap host will get you by. If you want more stability and better performance (aka a server not filled with 300x $3 customers) then pay a little bit more for a better host or dedicated server.

So yeah, you get what you pay for and running a server is never truly free.

It doesnt matter, all linux are good, CentOS is popular though.
everything is fine in the rig except the upload speed. That is very slow, what is the dl speed?

As Kaiser said, don't plan on using the internet, or computer for anything else.

@kaiser, you saw the specs, you really think that 4gb ram, core 2 duo, etc is running on 1000 watts? I highly doubt it. Plus, he's a kid, so he doesnt pay for electricity, so he has nothing to worry about.

Also, my 800th post!!! Woohoo

Servers get ddosed a shitload of times nowadays, how are you going to explain that to your mom plus the fact you had your pc on 24/7?

Don't have lots of players, and don't make any enemies! 30 player server would be fine on your connection, but try to find a cheap UPS or use an old laptop for battery backup. Make backups!

Re: Home Hosting - FlawPaw - 06.09.2013

It's better that you just get a cheap VPS and set up a SA-MP server, that costs lesser than home hosting's electricity bill. Not sure if the posts above me are true, but if you are a kid I'd suggest you wait until you get older and have your own debit card + do some part time jobs to get money. Unless you'd prefer to beg your parents for their credit card.

You think I dont? I do, but my electric bill isnt nearly as high as some other things i need to pay for, like the mortgage and the car .

Im saying that he probly doesnt pay cause hes a kid, god knows that i didnt pay the bills when i was 16.

Re: Home Hosting - gazzy1026 - 06.09.2013

Personally i find home hosting a whole lot cheaper and more "admin" Friendly.... myself i host 4 Servers on a similar system and they all run perfectly well when full.... no connection problems at all!

If you're worried about your connection test it at: http://www.speedtest.net/

Sometimes it also helps to set your server rates to help increase/decrease how much bandwidth the server actually uses...myself I use the Default SA-MP rates... they work perfectly fine...

Hope this is any help..
