Harry Potter roleplay? Good or bad? -
[Twixx] - 15.07.2013
Hey!
I've had this idea for a really long time now. To make a unique, Harry Potter styled wizard roleplay in a wizard school (probably not Hogwarts, because it's impossible to make it exactly the same and people would whine at parts which aren't correct).
There would be everything from the lessons where you can learn spells and stuff and great meals in Great Hall.
I have capable scripters and mappers to do this, I'm just wondering wether or not this would be a good idea and anyone would be interested in such server.

It is a realistic idea, however I'm not totally sure If anyone would be interested in coming along. It'd have to be perfect, without a defect. I have once (back in 2010) played in similar server. It was a medium-standards roleplay server. You could be a normal citizen or roleplay a wizard, fly around the city with a broom and kill the average Johnny with your index finger.
If the outcome of your idea is great, you can count me in. But the real problem might be finding teachers and students who won't powergame their powers.

Well, the teachers would be hand-picked members of the server admin team most likely. And students couldn't really powergame their powers, because all the spells would be script-wise. Also, if they do something wrong (like attack another student with spells) they'll get a warning, and if they do it again they get expelled (Then that character is gone, and they have to make a new one).

Yeah, do it, I've made lots of magicial stuff as I made a supernatural server. It'd be awesome tbh.

Then you're pretty much restricting players ruling here. The best you could do was create a section within your forums where community members could apply for teachers. I don't think that restricting the capability to 'be a teacher' should be clinquish of staff members.

You will need
very capable scripters for that because the task looks difficult. But it's unique. So yeah. Why not? Do it.

Actually, you got a point here. Good idea, people should also be able to apply if they're capable.

Let it be
you to pick players who can speak fluent English and have advanced knowledge of how roleplay works. You shouldn't also allow every players to play in the server. They should go through a very little roleplay test - If you want to keep high standards in your server.

wat. I don't see whats so complex about this? I had an idea about this before but as I'm not a good mapper and don't have the time to make it.
Its pretty simple really, map, move object (those moving stairs?), get position infront of player (for spell casting), camera vectors etc

Obviously, we won't let deathmatching noobs in the server, they'll definately have to pass a roleplay test and even then will have an eye keeped on them for awhile.

Although it will take a lot of time to make.

If you read the thread you would know that it probably wouldn't be based on Hogwarts, so no moving stairs sadly. I mean, if I get my hands on blueprints from, lets say, a Harry Potter game where they have most of the castle made, then sure, I could make Hogwarts along with my other mappers.

I read the thread. You don't have to have hogwarts to have moving stairs.. It would be something players recognize and sit back and go "WOW! I remember this from the movie" and keep them interested

Dealing with camera vectors looks easy to you?

Why so much RP, why not make a nice TDM Harry Potter server? The 4 main hogwart school groups (ravenclaw, hufflepuff, etc) could be the teams, and players could use different keys / commands to change peoples' skins, make them walk like normal pedestrians (instead of CJ), remove a certain weapon, etc.. There are waaaaaaaay too many RP servers out there now and not enough good TDMs, and a magical theme like this would make a perfect TDM In my opinion! I would love a server like this.

Functions are provided..
https://sampwiki.blast.hk/wiki/GetPlayerCameraFrontVector wouldn't take that long to get it working.

Well, TDM wouldn't bring that feeling and statisfaction of actually ''being'' in the wizard world. Also, if it was a TDM players wouldn't really care about the map that much either. If it's roleplay, it gives way more exploration choices (secret passages, for example). I'm not gonna make it strict roleplay where you get admin-jailed for not typing 20 long /me's to do a simple task. I'm trying to focus on having most of the stuff script-wise.

Not a bad idea. How would the spells be created ? In the movie, they mostly use wands. What's your idea about this ? And would you be able to fly with brooms or with whatever ?

I think the biggest problem of the maps is finding objects that fit in this theme. The standard GTA objects aren't really 'magic' if you see what I mean. I didn't read the whole thread, but using custom objects is always a possibility. Since you're planning to use a RP test you can also force players to install a customimg-file. Just pick an edited object and ask players what they're seeing - on that way you can know for sure if someone has the custom-img.
