Is it worth it? -

I have this PC Rig:
Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 3.0GHz X2
GTX 550ti
500GB hdd
4GB DDR2
Is it worth:
Upgrading to an Intel Core 2 Quad and overclocking to 3-3.5Ghz (Not sure what version as of yet)
Upgrading to 8GB DDR2
Is it worth doing this? Will it increase the performance dramatically or only slightly? Does the performance difference/change justify the amount I would spend doing this?

I'd say no, I think you should save up your money and get the new socket components due out very soon. The next intel i5 CPUs, the new motherboards that will also come out, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM at 1600Mhz. Spending money on that CPU and DDR2 RAM is a waste in my opinion.

What the amount you will be spending is the main factor, but always, upgrading your PC is awesome.

It'll probably cost in total Ј100. It's kinda hard for me to save though, it's my mom paying.

100! Then, hell no! I don't know at yours, but 100 euros is a bit too much in India to be paying for
that. My advice would be the same as the above poster.

Ј60 for the processor and Ј40 for the ram. That seems like a reasonable price and you don't find much cheaper than that. I will of course look into saving for the newer chips and mobo's. Thanks

The thing is its not really a noticeable upgrade, especially by today's standards.

From a dual core to a quad core is a pretty big difference. I'd say do it, but then again, that much for ram? ram is really cheap these days

That was true but with the components we have now, it's not really going to do him much good, his hardware is all outdated anyway. He'll need to upgrade it all very soon, he might as well do it now.

He may not, my grandfather has had the exact same computer since 1997. I keep telling him to get a new one but he won't. It's like a single core with like 256 mb of ram. Still uses it fine, no upgrades.
