It's illegal, though getting server donations, and them being used for the server is legal

No it's not illegal. If it was then game server hosts wouldn't be able to host them, and servers wouldn't be able to accept donations. You can sell servers, you can sell in-game features (VIP), you can sell game modes.

If you ask players to donate money and you use that money for things related to your server it's not a problem.

If you try to set up a business with it, it might be illegal.
