Also how am I meant to do it if the sscanf is not yet compatible?

Assuming you're using a Windows server, there are a couple of fixes around in the sscanf topic. Upgrade to 0.3d by replacing "announce.exe - samp-npc.exe - samp-server.exe" by the new ones and also update the includes which came with the 0.3d pack.
