CPU UPGRADE? -
sciman001 - 04.05.2011
Hi all. I am looking to upgrade my CPU. I am currently running a Pentium 4 at about 3.0 GHZ. I was thinking about these:
Pentium Dual Core
Core 2 Duo
Core 2 Quad
Xeon E3110
I am running on a socket 775. I have a graphics card. I dont think there really is anything else to say. So, what cpu from the above would give the best Bang For Your Buck? The games i play are Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and Call of Duty 2. I may get COD-MW2 and GTA4. Again, which CPU should i buy? I buy from Circuit City. THANKS!
P.S. This is my "gaming" pc.

Make sure the CPU you get works the sockets available for your motherboard.

If you plan on playing newer games, including GTA IV, get a quad-core.

Or get the new AMD x6,, It has 6 Cores

You can play GTA IV great at 45FPS with an Intel Celeron @ 2.6ghz, with everything on medium.
There is no need for a quad-core.
And this guy has socket 775, you'll have to check on your motherboard, but these CPU's exist for this type of socket:
Quote:
Intel Pentium 4 (2.60 - 3.80 GHz)
Intel Celeron D (2.53 - 3.60 GHz )
Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Intel Pentium D (2.66 - 3.60 GHz)
Pentium Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
Intel Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)

He said it's a Socket 775.. AMD needs an AM* board. Intel i7 needs an LGA-1156 IIRC.
I'd go for a newer Core2Quad, or overclock a Core2Duo past 3.0GHZ (I have an OC'd C2D on my desktop and it works great, most games are single threaded anyways so there's no point in buying a 6 core processor really).

1st gen i5, i7 860/870 = s1156
1st gen i7 920-990 = s1366
2nd gen i5/i7 = s1155
But yeah, you should go for a core 2 quad. It won't bottleneck as fast as you start upgrading your other components.
