IP address question - killdahobo99 - 22.12.2010

I have a dynamic IP from my ISP. I contacted them asking them what an alternative would be for me to try to change my IP address. He told me that If my desktop is connected to a router, that I can configure my router to have a static IP. Is this true?

How can I do this? I've been wanting to change my IP address for the longest time can someone help me with this.

You can configure your router to a DNS server

I can't help you further without knowing your router details.

Re: IP address question - killdahobo99 - 22.12.2010

I would like to be able to change my IP address, but my router is dynamic I believe, I have to change it to static.

What router information would you like me to provide?

Linxsys router

Model WRT54G2

Umm that's all I can think of lol.

What else?

I asked already before I made this topic. They will charge me for it

He said the alternative was to make my router have a static IP by configuring it through the router settings :/

It's like having a static ip but remember to always be updated to DynDNS software

they are never free, Bell Canada, Rogers, and all other ISP'S (using canada here) only offer it to their business customers, and its another 15$ a month. Yes, I have checked.

But on my Rogers internet, the ip isn't static but it doesn't change often. We switched in october, and it hasnt changed since, it will though.

I don't get why the support would tell you to do a thing over the router than they should be able to set it up easily but anyways just copy all your settings and your IP into your router and it will stay to that IP. My old router use to do that for me and I had the same IP for ages but if i ever used just the modem itself I had a new IP every time it restarted.
There is a setting in my SMC (rogers) router to never renew local ip's so its technically a static local ip.
