Maths Help! - patchkinson - 02.02.2010

I need help!!
i have a national math test tomorrow, from 9th year.
and one of the exercises of an older national math test is this:
A Game Card Board is bein drawed.
the game card board has the shape of a square, divided in small 64 squares..
the game card board's area will be 32 400 cm2.
The pieces for the game have the shape of a cilinder.
In Centimetres, whats the biggest diameters that the game pieces's base can have, to fit in one of the game card board's small squares..
i cant seem to solve this... dunno if easy or not, but i suck at maths, please help me. i need to study this!
thanks in advance
btw tell me how you solved it PLEASE!!

Re: Maths Help! - iLinx - 02.02.2010

when you say base i assume that your referring to the diameter of the circle
32,400 cm ^ 2 / 64 pieces = 506.25 cm ^ 2

square root of 506.25cm = 22.5 cm
therefore each square is 22.5 x 22.5, making the max diameter 22.5cm.

or if you need the radius it would be 11.25cm

not sure if i did it right, thats what i understood the question is about from your post, correct me if i understood wrong. :}

nah with base i meant the base of the pieces, being the part that goes into the board!

yeah the diameter of the circle... right?

its impossible to put a cylinder inside a square (since its 2 dimensional), so i assumed that you meant a circle
