64 bit Processor - BP13 - 22.01.2010

I have a x64 bit processor.
((AMD Athlon™ x64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 (2 CPUs), ~1.7GHz))

yet I have a x32(x86 based) bit windows 7. Is it required to have a x64 bit OS with this processor? What is the advantages? Disadvantages?

64bit has 64bit wide registers in general,
while 32bit has 32bit generals.

basically..
32bit can register a maximum of 4gb ram (2^32)
64bit can register 16exabytes of ram (2^64)

I got 32bit and can only use 3GB of ram while I actually have 4 installed.
That's mainly because manufacturers calculate like.. 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 B

Thats becuase of your os, the max supported ram in Windows 7 for 64bit is 192gb, operating systems always mash up the numbers as mave said.
Windows 7 32b only detects 3.2gb iirc

pretty much, if you dont need more than 4gb then stay on 32bit, seeing as most of todays applications are still 32bit optimized, and in some cases on 64bit the 32bit applications use more overhead causing slower running speeds.

I use 64bit whenever possible. Within the next 10 years everything will end up going to 64. Just how 16 bit went to 32 back in the day :P

If you move from 32-bit to 64-bit, you can expect a significant performance boost, since it is an AMD processor.

I've got a 32-bit Windows 7 and it supports atleast 6GB.
