It's really supposed to be SA:MP and not SA-MP. Why? Look at it this way:

San Andreas-Multi Player
San Andreas: Multi Player

OR Use it in a different context, such as:

Grand Theft Auto-4
Grand Theft Auto: 4

I still refer to it as SA:MP because ':' is easier to type than the dash

It is SA:MP ,not SA-MP
San Andreas: MP (Type of San Andreas, aka it's MP)
San Andreas - MP ("-" was originally made for double words (got no example in head) © Grammar)

I use both:

If i have to type only sa-mp as a single word, i type: "Sa-mp".
When im typing about the forum, i use "Sa:mp-Forum"

But i really don't know why

It can be both.

San Andreas: Multiplayer fits.
San Andreas - Multiplayer fits too.
But i guess it depends on taste.

I use all options, but very often 'sa-mp'. :P
